Koholā Gallery and Gifts
was created by renowned photographer Douglas J Hoffman to share the Beauty and Majesty of Maui, and beyond.
Visitors will see an exceptional display of Maui landscapes that include sunsets, sandy beaches, bamboo forest, and the tropical forests along the road to Hana. The underwater world is also represented with stunning portraits of dolphins, turtles, coral reefs, and of course whales. Paintings of well known local artists as well as stunning and imaginative glass cultures made by the Kai Pua Gallery, and hand made silver jewelry complement the space.
“Koholā” means whale in the language of Hawaii, and these animals are the gallery owners spiritual guardian or “Aumakua”. It all began with a chance encounter with a Humpback Whale at Molokini island back in 2003. Since then, Douglas Hoffman, has been leading groups around the world to observe and photograph Humpback and Sperm Whales. Over the years Douglas’ photographs have received international awards and acclaim. During whale season in Maui, Douglas gives frequent presentations to the public about the whales, educational programs for children in schools, and has become known locally as “the whale guy”.
Hoffman received the Master of Photography Degree in 2012, and in addition to the gallery he serves as the Director of Maui Photo Tours & Workshops, and Maui Photography LLC, the islands most established photography tour, safari, and workshop and family portrait companies. When ever not working, or with his children Douglas can be found out in Nature either diving a reef or photographing the Maui coastline. They say if you love what you do you never work a day in your life, Douglas certainly agrees with the philosophy.
